Loosing K
When playing poker with a man who coincidentally owes him money, Amos accidently says ‘Jack’, ad the man threatens to turn him in if the debt is not forgotten. Amos, who believes-the man is bluffing-is immediately turned in, prompting him to fall of the wagon. ‘K’ falls from the sign, and Nate kisses Tassie. Rory Cummels-who owns the shop near Mittie and Tassie’s house-invites Gwenette to coffee at his house. His family has left the island, and his wife is ready to divorce him.
Tassie and Nate stay with the Minnow Peas in order to speak with Council Member Lyttle. After some convincing, Lyttle agrees to the quest of a new pangram under the conditions that the sentence is under thirty-two letters, and is found before November 16th (Being Nollop’s birthday). The Council agrees to the proposition, which soon becomes known as ‘Enterprise thirty-two. They also pass a decree stating that any property left by those banished from the island would be given to those of the Council to decide what to do with it.
The people of the village take advantage of the age-loophole, and use those under seven-years to write the pangrams for them, and a professor by the name of Mannheim soon writes a letter under forty-two letters. ‘F’ and another ‘O’ fall from the sign. News of Nollopiana comes to the council, and they immediately arrest Nate. The council allows numbers to be used, even those with illegal letter. Mittie violates the second offense, and is turned in again by Gorgeanne Towgate. Enterprise Thirty-two is stuck at forty-seven letters.
L.E.B thugs search homes to turn people in. Amos becomes very alcoholic, and banished Nollopians have trouble in the states. Council representatives come to take Rory’s store, in order to turn it into a church for Nollop. After a ranting religious outburst, Rory is exiled. Two ‘E’s’ and ‘B’ fall from the sign, as Tassie desperately tries to reach Nate through letters.
This section is a very important one, because while it eliminates Agnes Prather, Rory Cummels and Nate Warren from the island, it also allows the characters to develop more. Gwennette, fed up with the whole affair, purposely violates the law. Amos, in a bout of stress and depression, lounges back into alcoholism, while Ella adjusts to frightening times, and tries to keep the family together. Also, the enterprise 32 is going to become a big thing very soon to some of the people that remain on the island and do not get banished.
